During the ancient times, Hersonissos was an important trading center. The today's town is built over the the ruins of the ancient town and the port is the old roman port. The visitor is able to admire the roman fountain with the mosaics, the ancient theater, the ruins of the roman waterfront and the ancient fishtanks, as well as the paleochristian basilica with the mosaic floors. Very fascinating is also the visit at the folklore art museum "Lychnostatis" which gives the oportunity to the visitor to learn more about the traditional life of Crete.
