During the ancient times, Hersonissos was an important trading center. The today's town is built over the the ruins of the ancient town and the port is the old roman port. The visitor is able to admire the roman fountain with the mosaics, the ancient theater, the ruins of the roman waterfront and the ancient fishtanks, as well as the paleochristian basilica with the mosaic floors.
