Palekastro is a fairly large working village that lies on the eastern side of Crete and has been an agricultural society since ancient times. Recently it has been discovered by tourists for its laid-back atmosphere and quiet beaches. While not directly on the water, the beach is a mere twenty minute walk from Palekastro. The waters near Palekastro are often frequented by wind surfers because the meltemi; summer winds that make conditions favorable for the sport. For those wishing for more a quieter beach experience, there are numerous, remote bays within walking distance.

Accommodations in Palekastro can be found in private homes, by renting individual apartments or staying in one of the small hotels in either the village of 1100 people or closer to the beaches. Prices for rooms are considered very reasonable for a tourist area. Like accommodations, there are a number of restaurants in both the village and near the beaches.
There are also a number of shops that supply the villager’s needs and can provide any necessities that the traveler may require. Small mini-market stands are scattered throughout the village offering local fruits and vegetables for sale. Reaching the village of Palekastro can be accomplished by bus from Sitia, although to truly enjoy the region having private transportation is preferable. Nightlife, as in clubs or bars, is practically non-existent in the village as most of the locals live a farming lifestyle. Palekastro does not consider itself a tourist destination.

Remnants of Minoan ruins still surround Palekastro, although it is believed that these may be threatened by the tourist trade. For those who have an interest in ancient history, Palekastro can be the ultimate destination for learning about the past. For the tourist, Palekastro can be the perfect laid back vacation. Each season offers its own special allure, from the milling of olives for oil in the winter to the beautiful floral delights of summer.
For those looking for peace and quiet, the village can offer what can seem like a step back into a slower time and place. While probably not a choice for a family vacation, Palekastro would be the perfect Grecian destination for couples; either for honeymooners or those celebrating an anniversary and those just looking for a wonderful time together. Those looking for a lively, thrill a minute vacation experience would probably do better seeking out a different resort area of Crete.
