Milatos is a village on the east coast, close to
Agios Nikolaos. It does not have too much going for it. The harbour could have been nice were it not that they used prefabricated pieces of concrete instead of rocks to construct it, taking away every bit of charm. There is also not any beach worth meantioning that you have to go and see. Only the part with the taverna's and the shops on the sea are nice, and there are a couple of interesting small churches in the aerea. Above the seaside resort, up the road, is the bigger part of
Milatos.
Getting there is really best done by car on a small windy road passing through either Epano Sissi or south from Vrahassi or Neapoli. There is also a dirt road linking Sissi to
Milatos beach.
Apart from swimming and relaxing at the beach, the area is very good for sightseeing. Archaeological survey has shown that the actual scenic village with the cute small, whitewashed houses has been built on the place of the ancient homonymous Minoan city. According to tradition, Minoan people from this area had settled in Asia Minor in the mid-2 nd millennium b.C., and established the famous city of
Milatos, which flourished for a long time in the Archaic and Classical periods. Several burials of the Late Minoan period have been found here..
