When we first discovered Makrigialos in southeast Crete, it was a well-kept secret - a tiny quiet village with a lovely, uncrowded beach. The beach is still there, but Makrigialos village has grown into a lively resort in its own right, with a good choice of places to eat, and several bars. 'Makri' means long, and 'yalos' means shore - and it's sand and shingle all the way along and out into the sea. The shallow, warm water offers safe swimming for all, and spread along the beach are several tavernas and bars. Shopping is still fairly limited, but you'll find all the essentials. There are cars for hire, and plenty of trips and excursions to all the Cretan sights.

Makrigialos

Makrigialos attracts many visitors since it possesses one of the finest beaches in the Lassithi Prefecture and unique countryside. Makris Gialos is a favorite destination for nature lovers, as it has canyons and caves that are ideal for exploration. Beside the beach are many tavernas, cafes and bars where visitors can relax while gazing at the deep blue sea. The south coastal road runs through the village, with regular buses if you want to explore a little.
We suspect most people who choose Makrigialos won't want to do much more than relax and enjoy the simple things in life - swimming, windsurfing, fresh fish and salad lunches in a beachside taverna, dinner under the stars overlooking the old harbour, a drink or three... maybe followed by dancing off a few of those calories at the disco. This magical little village is all about seasons in the sun!

Makrigialos Crete

Makrigialos still unspoiled and an ideal spot for those searching for quiet holidays, with visitors returning year after year. The long sandy beach has crystal clear shallow waters and is perfect for children and non- swimmers. The beach is lined with a good variety of tavernas to suit all tastes, the fishing harbour being the most picturesque part of the village.
In traditional tavernas meat, fish and other local dishes are served. The numerous fish tavernas also serve fresh fish caught locally. In all restaurants & cafes , the quality of the food is excellent and prices are reasonable. The excellent climate of the area (around 340 sunny days per year), the beautiful landscape and the warm hospitality attracts visitors of all ages. Makrigialos has a very good supply of shops, tavernas, cafes, and water sport facilities, disco bars, one bank, pharmacy, doctor, dentist, car rental, florist and car service stations. There is a street market (09-14.00) each Friday on the cross road to Agios Stefanos, near the harbour entrance.
