Kolymbari is a small, quiet fishing village at the foot of the Rodopou peninsula, 23 km west of Chania, on the island of Crete, is a great place to get away and relax if you’re after for a nice, quiet destination that has been relatively untouched by an overabundance of tourism. Kolymbari is a typically laid-back Cretan resort, with a friendly atmosphere. It's not somewhere where you can go all out on a shopping spree or dance the night away at a club. But if you love soaking up the sun and dipping in to the local culture, then this is the place for you. One of the village's main claims to fame is its ancient monastery, which has survived assaults by six invaders, including an attack in World War II. And next door is the Ecclesiastical Academy of Crete.

Kolymbari beach

Nestled between majestic green cliffs and the Mediterranean Sea, Kolymbari is also known for its beautiful beach, cozy tavernas and cafés including a seaside stone-built café on the beach, as well as several restaurants and a few shops. The shops available offer everyday essentials in addition to some souvenirs, but there isn't a huge variety or a selection.
The long sandy pebble beach is being improved and artificially enlarged by some fine, powdery, shipped-in sand and is ideal for leisurely swimming. Kolymbari, free from large hotel chains and multiple accommodation units, offers several small hotels and other new and older accommodation by the beach as well as higher up, overlooking the sea and the village itself. Some examples of places to stay include Elia Traditional Inn; Spilia Village Luxury Traditional Resort and The Old Olive Mill. Kolymbari, as a little quaint fishing village, is not renowned for its nightlife, but if you enjoy calm evenings with long and lazy drinks and dinners, then it might be just what you need. It is best suited to those looking for a relaxing, quiet, serene and cultural experience.

Kolymbari

From Kolymbari it is very easy to visit the Gonia Monastery which is located 1 km to the north and celebrates greatly on the 15th of August. It was built during the 17th century in a wonderful place, it is surrounded by verdant vegetation and it offers a magnificent view. The Monastery has a fortress form, overlooking the bay in front of it; it was also a centre of resistance during the revolution of 1821. The Gonia Monastery hosts today an important collection of precious post-Byzantine icons, relics, and other rare religious treasures. The Orthodox Academy of Crete is located next to the Gonia Monastery. While staying in Kolymbari you can visit (by boat) the north-eastern edge of Rodopou peninsula where one can see the ruins of the ancient town Dyktinna, the Gramvousa island with the Gramvousa castle at the top, and the beach Balos (you can also go there on foot). Kolymbari is very near the Falasarna and Balos beaches which are regarded as two of the purest beaches of Crete and you should visit them both. The famous Elafonisi beach is also quite near; in 1 hour driving distance.
