Kokkini Hani was originally a small fishing village, which became a popular weekend retreat for the residents of nearby Heraklion, thanks to the area's good sand and shingle beaches and clean warm waters. Nowadays there are several modern hotel complexes here, with a good selection of bars, and all the local shops and restaurants you'd expect in a growing tourist resort. Even so, Kokkini Hani (or "K-H" for short) is much quieter and laid back compared to the young and lively hotspots of Hersonissos and Malia, just a few kilometres further east. It's a short hop by regular local bus or taxi into the bustling capital for shopping or dining, or to experience the magic of Knossos. |
Kokkini is an excellent base for exploring the region by hire car. Up in the hills behind the resort you'll find several sleepy traditional villages, a couple of delightful monasteries, and even some cool caves to investigate if you fancy a break from the glorious Cretan sun. There's a water park nearby at the picturesque village of Anopolis, complete with artificial waves, waterslides, and a children's pool, and "K-H" even has its own archaeological site - the Minoan villa at Niros.

Due to its proximity to Heraklion, Kokkini Hani first became a popular summer resort for the residents of Heraklion and later, that tourism industry started to develop, a renowned tourist resort. There are many large and luxurious hotels, as well as many smaller family owned ones, taverns, bars, restaurants, shops etc.Fully organised and very close to Heraklion, the beach offers full accommodation facilities in many hotels of any kind and category, food and drink in several fish taverns, restaurants, beach bars and cafes. Facilities for swimming and sunbathing (numerous sunbeds, umbrellas and showers), safety (lifeguards) and sea sports are also available on the beach.
Apart from the main, organised and noisy beach, at the area of Hani Kokkini you will find several small sandy beaches more quiet and without many people, affected by the northern winds. If you prefer swimming and sunbathing almost alone, ask the locals about them; they will show you the way and ...have a good swim. |
