Bali was originally a small fishing hamlet, but over the years has grown into a bustling tourist village, with pretty white houses and lots of flowers set closely around little hillsides, overlooking the little fishing harbour and the sea. The delightful way in which this tucked away village hugs the coastline of hills and valleys makes it a very attractive and romantic spot, with restaurants and tavernas jumbling together close to the waters edge. Life is easy going and simple with lots of opportunity to bask in the sun or to enjoy the clear calm sea at number of tiny sand and shingle beaches, and Bali offers a large choice of tavernas, restaurants, little shops, and a disco. |
One of the little coves is for naturist sun bathing. It is 32 km to Rethymno and about 46 km to Heraklion or 45 minute drive, with the main highway just about 2 km out of the village and a regular bus service on the highway to both towns. From Bali there are plenty of worthwhile sightseeing opportunities, for example the Melidoni cave in the traditional mountain village of Margarites, or the old pottery works. Bali is built in one of the most beautiful regions of the island, in the place of ancient Atoli. In that place the blue sky and the light blue of the sea come together in a beautiful combination. |
The marvellous sandy beaches round the settlement are offered for swimming, while for food there are a lot of traditional taverns in which you can have Cretan specialties. In the evening the visitor can have fun in the cafe - bars and the clubs of the region. With only 40km distance from Heraklion and 30km from Rethymnon, in the past few year Bali village has been developed in a popular resort for tourists, maintaining simultaneously and his traditional character.
In Bali you will find many supermarkets, a bakery, an ATM cash point, a doctor's surgery and health clinic, 2 internet cafes and several outlets to exchange money. Bali has recently improved and enlarged its four superb sandy beaches which are sheltered and safe for children, the first of which is only a 15 minute walk from the Villa Arcadia. Watersports available include paragliding, canoeing, jetskis, pedaloes and sail / motor boats There is also scuba diving with training to best appreciate the crystal clear sea. All the beaches are well served by excellent bars and tavernas |
You can still organise a lot of excursions as visit the old city of Rethymnon, the Abbey Preveli, the monastery of Arkadi, the cavern of Melidoni, the ancient city Eleftherna etc. Apart from the lot of installations of the village, Bali is also an ideal starting line in order to explore the impressive landscape of medium and western Crete (Idi and Lefka Ori).
Bali attracts a good mix of visitors from all over Europe and is also popular with local Cretan and Greek holidaymakers. From the working fishing harbour coastal boat trips run daily to various locations including the town of Rethymnon. A boat trip to the island of Santorini can be arranged locally. A car (arranged on request) is not essential as a bus stop is only a 10 min walk away, but is recommended to take advantage of this central Crete location giving easy access to the nearby mountain villages and old towns such as Rethymnon. |
