Almirida is a small, picturesque village by the sea which is located 21 km east of Chania, it is an ideal place if you want a quiet holiday since it still has the air of a fishing village. Quiet even in the busy months, Almirida has two sandy Blue Flag beaches, the smaller one to the west and a long curving beach to the east; the eastern side is particularly safe for young children. Both have loungers and parasols for rent. You can also hire wind surfers and sailing boats for day trips around the peninsular. A well-known windsurfing school is located on the west beach. Almirida village is very well served with beachside tavernas which are popular with locals and visitors. |
The village now has several mini markets as well as a bakers, an internet cafe and a couple of quite trendy bars. Mountain bikes can be hired locally and on the beach you can rent sun beds. The rolling wooded countryside behind Almirida is some of the most beautiful in Crete and a walkers paradise, especially in April and May when spring flowers carpet the landscape in colourful abandon. If you are looking for exciting nightlife Almirida is definitely not a good choice but for a quiet relaxing holiday by the sea, it certainly takes some beating.
