Agia Roumeli, is a small village on the shores of the Libyan sea, on the western side of the island of Crete.
Breathtakingly beautiful in its sheer simplicity, it is situated west of the town of Sfakia, and built near the ancient ruins of Tara, on the edge of the Samaria gorge. The village is named for the rebuilt church of Agia Roumeli, a local saint. The current location of the village was selected folowing the earthquakes of 1954, and what a location it is!!! Not only is the sea crystal clear but the sand is pristine white, so that the whitewashed houses of the hospitable villagers seem to meld with the sand of the foreshore  where they are built. Agia Roumeli village is located 69 km. south of Chania.

Agia Roumeli

Visiting  Agia Roumeli, is like moving back in time, the area is completely unspoilt,  and mostly undiscovered . The locals who adhere to the age old customs of the region, are also friendly and affable. The location is perfect for unwinding, forgetting the cares of the world and indulging in the drinking of the local wines, notably tsikoudia, and eating the local cuisine for which the island is famous. Agia Roumeli is not a destination for the sophisticated tourist, but more for the discerning traveller looking for a laidback, and unforgettable expirience.

In Agia Roumeli and its surroundings you can relax, you can switch off the outside world. You almost forget it exists. Here you can watch all the stars, the galaxies.
The natural geographical position of Agia Roumeli aids this tranquil sensation.

Agia Roumeli Beach

Agia Roumeli becomes merely a place where you get some refreshments. Here you wait for the ferryboat to take you back to a tour bus which will bring you to your departure point. But Agia Roumeli is so much more than this!! Once the last boat has left, the village becomes again a restful, calm community between wild mountains and the deep, blue sea.
Today, at the site of the ancient temple, you will spot the church of Panaghia (the Holy Mother), exhibiting worthwhile mosaics of the 15th century. During the summer months, lots of visitors come to Agia Roumeli, since the village is located at a distance of 1.5 km. from the exit of the Gorge of Samaria. From Agia Roumeli and at a walking distance of about an hour you will find the small Byzantine church where it is said that the Apostle Paul came to teach.
